No Perfect Hero by Nicole Snow was a bit confusing. I picked it up because the blurb sounded like a good summer romantic suspense. And it had romance…and suspense. But there was something about the book that didn’t quite flow.
It starts out as most romances do with the backstory about the FMC. It seems to follow standard romance procedure and was pretty enjoyable. Girl’s life goes down the tubes, girl takes off on a road trip to start over, girl breaks down in quaint town and meets surly mountain man to tempt a saint. The chemistry and animosity between the two main characters is pretty intense…especially since, unlike most romances, they don’t give in right away. Then, it suddenly switches into a suspense novel and the FMC becomes a side character. You still get her POV; and she still plays a major part, but all the character development you get in the first half sort of switches off. The focus of the first half of the book is pretty character-driven. The second half is definitely plot-driven. Snow seems to lose interest in her own characters and can’t be bothered with anymore development. They stagnate. The chemistry that was palpable is barely talked about and the romance is…meh. It’s like once the characters finally admit they’re attracted to each other, the author couldn’t be bothered.
If you take the two halves of the book by themselves, they’ve both got the makings of a great story. However, there’s a disconnect in the shift that makes it difficult to get into the second half. I was expecting more romance and hoping for a great plot twist. Snow brings the romance back, but it lacks the intensity of the first part of the book. Warren is still a surly mountain man, but his focus is not on the girl, and you can tell.
Unfortunately, Snow can’t seem to maintain the suspense very well, either. It becomes fairly predictable in how everything is going to play out, which is disappointing. The romance aspect of the story has taken a back seat to the suspense, but there isn’t much suspense to keep it moving. Add in the fact that we suddenly have a supporting cast of heroes-to-be when they almost weren’t mentioned in the first half, and it’s almost like 2 different people wrote the 2 halves. The second epilogue also felt out of place. It was pretty unnecessary and felt like a marketing ploy to set up the possibility of a few more books out of this world.
Despite all this, the story itself was enjoyable once I got back into it and would make a decent summer read. Because of the predictability of the suspense part of the book, it doesn’t require much thought to get through, but still keeps you mostly engaged. Grab a copy for your summer reading list today.
